Abstract

UGM is well known for its strong favour for  the interest of groups of people who live with less-than-average socioeconomic status. This attitude is clearly reflected by UGM’s policies and programs in the education, research, and community service sectors.

ICT is instrumental in improving socioeconomic welfare, so introduction of ICT to public communities and their environment is very important. However, ICT is often associated with high tech and expensive technology, so appropriate approaches are required for effective ICT implementation in this particular environment.

The talk will discuss different avenues of UGM’s contribution in the field of ICT in public communities and their environment.  Programs in the education, research, and community service sectors are developed to address specific issues due to the characteristics of the people. Our experiences show that non-technical aspects are more important than implementation of the technology itself.
