The NTU Hackathon: Innovating Functional Recovery 2026 competition was held from May 2–3, 2026, by Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore, in collaboration with partner networks in Thailand including Klong Dinsor, LUKKID, and BUILD2GETHER, with the competition venue at Knowledge Xchange for Innovation (KX) and GMI buildings.
The competition was held under the concept of “Innovating Functional Recovery” aimed at opening space for students and young innovators to develop ideas and create innovative prototypes that can be applied to physical rehabilitation, especially for stroke patients who may have limitations in controlling and moving parts of their bodies, focusing on integrating game technology, software, hardware, and connected devices to make rehabilitation activities more engaging and applicable.
Throughout the two-day competition, participants learned about stroke patient rehabilitation from real cases, game development using Unity, and the application of the “Plakod” Game Controller device developed by Klong Dinsor company as part of the rehabilitation activity design. On the final day, contestants developed prototypes of both hardware and software and presented their work to the judges.
The “Chef Bba” project by ThunderPermanent is a minimalistic cooking game designed as an activity to promote rehabilitation for stroke patients, focusing on exercising the arm muscles and all five fingers through gameplay that encourages users to move and exercise their bodies while playing.
In addition to game development, ThunderPermanent also applied and designed devices for use with the game to assist in exercising and rehabilitating the muscles, making the project both software and hardware integrated, aligning with the competition’s goal to create innovations for rehabilitation that can be further developed.
This competition received over 200 team applications from various educational institutions and selected 50 teams for the competition round, reflecting the interest of students and new developers in applying technology to health and rehabilitation challenges.
The success of the ThunderPermanent team is another achievement reflecting the capabilities of students from the School of Information Technology Ladkrabang in integrating knowledge of technology, game development, device design, and creative thinking to create innovations that address real problems and benefit society.
